Mission Control

One page, all lanes. The buy chain from 06-10 was reopened on 06-11: the Virus is the heart favorite, the Pi box is locked in, the Modwave is up for disposition. Both active lanes are meant to be standing by the Karwan gig on July 4.

Mission: Get sound generation off the iPad (instrument-AUv3 limit). Lane A delivers the electronic character plus 4-part sequencing, Lane B the keys (piano/EP/organ/strings) with the owned Pianoteq license. Loopy stays the conductor, the L6 stays the interface.
Budget frame ~2,000 EUR (broke until Karwan money) Lane A + B together ~1,450-1,750 EUR Target: July 4 live-ready As of 2026-06-11 · 6-agent verify today

v3 verdict shift 2026-06-11 (2 research bombs)

1. Pianoteq transfer: YES, 0 EUR. The iOS in-app purchases (~400 EUR of packs) are full Modartt licenses - register the serial in the Modartt account, download the desktop/Linux version, done. No re-buy for the Pi box. 2. The Virus TI has REAL wavetable morphing (index 0-127 interpolates, live via CC#17/22) - so the Virus covers the wavetable mission and Lane C (Modwave) loses its main reason.

Korg Modwave Module

575 EUR (Thomann, in stock) · fallback status
Main reason gone (Virus WT) Still the best module pick

Was the default buy from 06-06 to 06-11. The Virus WT-morphing verdict takes the wavetable mission away from it, the Pi box takes the keys mission. What remains: user sample import (4 GB), motion seq, Kaoss - nice, but never the core mission.

Reactivate only if: the Virus deal falls through OR there is budget + appetite for the sample-import playground left after the double buy.

Stereo-Out Power Synths for the Pianist Sustain Workflow

Modules and desktops that do not need multi-out. Sound character and 16+ voice polyphony matter more. iPad and Loopy Pro stay at the center.

Mission filter: Multi-out is NOT the mission. Pianist with sustain pedal workflow plus modern bleeding-edge sound DNA. 16 voices is the floor, 60+ is Tier-S. Stereo out is fine. No cheesy PCM workstations. No full keyboards.

All top picks re-verified on the web: Modwave Module 575 EUR, Wavestate Module 609, Opsix Module 545 (all Thomann, in stock, Korg price drop). New in this report: deep dives on Modwave MK2 keyboard, Jupiter-Xm, MicroFreak/MiniFreak (tab "Deep Dives 06-10") and the full DIY / open-source story (tab "DIY Pi Box"). Cross-checked: "Prophet XM" and "MacroFreak" do not exist — what was meant: Jupiter-Xm and MiniFreak. The default-buy verdict is unchanged.

What this search does differently

The predecessor report (Multi-Out Mega-Report 2026-06-04) used multi-track-out as a hard filter. This one does not. Stereo stems straight from the synth into the L6 or the iPad audio bus are fine. In trade, sound character, voice count and sample loading are weighted higher. Result: a different winner list, a different price range and a different strategy.

Score axes (1-10)

  • Real polyphony (with layer stress)
  • Multi-engine plus sample loading
  • iPad path (USB-MIDI + CC)
  • Sound modernity (no vintage PCM)
  • Price per value

What is hard K-O

  • Under 16 voices = sustain collapses
  • Mono / paraphonic = pianist impossible
  • No aftertouch = MPE controllers out
  • Full keyboard = form-factor K-O
  • AWM2 / ZEN-Core cheese family = K-O

What earns bonus

  • MIDI 2.0 poly-AT
  • Damper jack on the unit
  • Class-compliant USB audio
  • Vault continuity (tooling exists)
  • Battery mobility

Ranked by the 5-axis score (max 50). Tier-S starts at 40. Each pick comes with reasoning and vault continuity notes.

Lane C status since 06-11: disposition

This ranking remains technically correct - but the mission has shifted: the Virus WT-morphing verdict (tab "Lane A") takes the wavetable mission away from the Modwave, the Pi box (tab "Lane B") takes the keys mission. The Modwave remains the best MODULE pick of this list and reactivates if the Virus deal falls through or budget for the sample-import playground shows up later.

#2 02

Korg Wavestate mkII Module

120 stereo voices, Wave-Seq 2.0, 4 GB sample
609 EUR (Thomann 06-10)

Highest voice count in the sweep under 800 EUR. Complementary to Modwave (wave-sequencing vs wavetable-sample).

#1 01

Korg Modwave Module

60 stereo voices, WT plus PCM, 4 GB user samples
575 EUR (Thomann 06-10)
45/ 50

Default buy. 60 stereo voices, MIDI 2.0 poly-AT, damper jack, vault tooling already exists. Foundation for the full stack strategy.

#3 03

Roland Jupiter-Xm

256 dyn voices, 5-part multi, battery
700-950 EUR used / 1549 new
43/ 50

Only 5-part multi with battery in the sweep. 4 VA engines plus PCM plus drums. XLR plus TRS parallel. Zenology GX iPad app May 2026 syncs.

Tier S

#1 Korg Modwave Module

575 EUR (Thomann 06-10)
45
60 stereo voices MIDI 2.0 Poly-AT Damper Jack 4 GB user WT Class-compl USB
Form: 4U Rack / Desktop
Engine: WT plus PCM plus Kaoss plus 16 ModLanes
Sample load: 4 GB via Sample Builder
Out: Stereo TRS

60 stereo voices means every voice is rendered intrinsically stereo. Pad and soundscape king with a huge sustain reserve. Serum wavetables import directly (no conversion). Kaoss Physics X-Y plus Motion Sequencing 2.0 for live improv.

Vault bonus: SnappySnap MCP exists (modwave_ai_control), 8 preset bundles plus file-format RE done (modwave_presets_and_format). Onboarding friction is minimal.

Tier S

#2 Korg Wavestate mkII Module

609 EUR (Thomann 06-10)

Form: 4U Rack / Desktop
Engine: Wave-sequencing 2.0 (lanes)
Sample load: 4 GB via Sample Builder
Out: Stereo TRS

Highest voice count in the sweep under 800 EUR. Four parallel lanes (timing, sample, melody, shape, step-value) controlled separately plus vector joystick morphing. Eight hardware knobs plus joystick = live-performance ready.

Complementary to Modwave: wave-sequencing morph (texture, movement) vs wavetable-sample (solo voice, pad). Both Korg workflow, both MIDI 2.0.

Tier S

#3 Roland Jupiter-Xm

700-950 EUR used / 1549 new
43
256 dyn voices 5-part multi Battery 8x AA XLR plus TRS parallel Slim keys 37
Form: 37 mini keys, battery
Engine: 4 VA (J8/Juno-106/JX-8P/SH-101) plus PCM plus drums
Sample load: Cloud expansions (no direct user)
Out: XLR plus stereo TRS

Only unit in the sweep with real 5-part multi-timbral plus battery. Essentially a standalone mini-workstation. XLR plus TRS parallel = 2 stereo sends. Zenology GX iPad app May 2026 syncs sounds cleanly.

Caveat: Sound DNA is vintage VA models, not bleeding-edge like Modwave. Slim keys: use Erae or LUMI as external master.

Tier S

#4 Korg Opsix Module

545 EUR (Thomann 06-10)
42
64-80 voices Altered FM 6-op MIDI 2.0 Poly-AT No sample load
Form: 4U Rack / Desktop
Engine: Altered FM (6 synthesis styles)
Sample load: No (FM only)
Out: Stereo TRS

Cheapest top pick in the sweep. Modern dirty FM, not Yamaha vintage. Six operator-mixer sliders for live operator mixing. Polyphonic motion sequencing.

Caveat: No sample loading. Not the primary tier for pianist alone, but as a companion to Modwave (FM counterpoint to wavetable) it sings.

Tier A

#5 Akai MPC Live III

1569 EUR new, 11-14 weeks lead time (06-10)
41
256 voices 128 GB SSD 32-ch USB audio Battery Workstation pivot
Form: Compact desktop, battery
Engine: Keygroup sampler plus 12+ plugin synths
Sample load: UNLIMITED 128 GB SSD
Out: Stereo plus 32-out USB

Only unit in the list with a verified class-compliant multi-channel audio path direct to iPad. Can even replace the Loopy USB-audio interface for subsets. Twelve-plus plugin synths on top.

Risk: MPC wants to be its own workstation. You could end up architected out of the Loopy-first workflow. Only justifiable if the multi-sample library mission becomes central.

Honorable Mention

Waldorf Iridium Desktop mk2

2399 EUR new / mk1 2000-2500 used
37
16 voices borderline 6 engines Granular sampling USB-Host No direct damper jack

Premium-tier sound-design powerhouse. Six engines (WT, granular, waveform, kernel-FM, resonator, seeds). Score drop: 16 voices is the floor. In 4-layer multi mode that becomes 4 voices/part = practically unusable for sustain in multi mode. Only the single-patch 16-voice case is realistic. 2399 EUR vs the Modwave plus Wavestate stack at ~1200 EUR is diminishing returns.

Access Virus TI2 Desktop

The character synth with the 4-part parallel vision. Comes from the multi-out arc (06-03) and was never part of this stereo sweep - now its own lane with everything the sessions have verified since.

NEW 06-11: the Virus has REAL wavetable morphing

The WaveTable mode (TI-only, separate from the classic wave select) has an index 0-127 that INTERPOLATES between the two nearest waves (manual-verified) - modulatable via LFO/Env/ModMatrix and live via CC#17/22 (Osc Shape = index in WT mode). An interpolation parameter sets smooth morph (0) to stepping (127) and is itself a ModMatrix target. Grain/formant modes morph the same ~99 tables with an additional formant axis. No user import - but the wavetable MISSION is covered. This is the Lane C killer.

The vision

4 patches in parallel, Loopy conducts

  • Part 1 (ch 1): acid seq - Loopy MIDI loop fires, CC#74/71 tweaked live
  • Part 2 (ch 2): arp - Virus arp or Rozeta, hold via CC#64
  • Part 3 (ch 3): bassline - Loopy sequence, its own stereo out
  • Part 4 (ch 4): pad chords looped - 80 voices dynamic (real ~40)
  • Outs: 3 stereo pairs freely assignable per part = multi-stem into the L6 (rig constraint #2 satisfied)
  • Hands-on: part focus on the unit remotely switchable via SysEx - one Loopy button per part
Loopy control essentials

What the sessions have already verified

  • Part-focus SysEx (C123): F0 00 20 33 01 10 72 00 7B vv F7 with vv = 00-03 for parts 1-4. Display + HW knobs jump along - purely cosmetic, CCs ALWAYS route by channel
  • PolyAT gotcha: set CONFIG > MIDI Control HiPage = SysEx, OTHERWISE Erae/LUMI poly-AT wrecks the Page-B params
  • No NRPN - 3-page architecture (A=CC, B=PolyPrs/SysEx, C=SysEx). The full CC map lives in the vault (128 Page-A CCs + top 30 curated)
  • PC kills a sounding note - prefix patch buttons with all-notes-off
  • iPad path: DIN MIDI only (USB not class-compliant, Total Integration = Mac/PC plugin, dead). The L6 can bridge iPad USB MIDI to DIN (gate test!)
Beef-up plan

"Not quite warm yet" - what makes the Virus hot

  • FX chain in Loopy: FX AUv3 are NOT affected by the iPad ban (instrument AUv3 only). Turnado + Loopy bus FX on the Virus stems = the modernization lever
  • Preset collabs: write to preset makers (networking/barter) - 16 RAM banks are waiting
  • Soundset base: factory + Marco Scherer / Plughugger Virus banks as a start
  • OsTIrus as a studio twin: free on the M3 Max for patch design, then SysEx dump into the hardware
Honest caveats

What you are buying into

  • EOL Feb 2024 (Kemper-confirmed): DSP chips sold out, repair risk high - bench-test before buying, do NOT update firmware over USB
  • 80 voices nominal, real ~40, fewer with grain/formant stacks - patch discipline required (use the simple modes)
  • Score honesty: in THIS sweep frame (pianist stereo axes) it would score ~32/50 - the Lane A choice rests on axes the sweep does not measure: 4-part sequencing, multi-stem outs, character, heart
  • No sample/multi-sample - keys stay Lane B

1. Check the Koepenick Virus by phone (listing ID 3428042352) - at 1,400 with original box/test in Berlin it is fair, negotiated toward 1,200-1,300 it is very good. 2. Deep Dive

Korg Modwave MK2 Keyboard

649 EUR new (Thomann 06-10) · thin used market
43
60 stereo voices engine = Module 37 keys, no AT +74 EUR +1.2 kg
Engine: identical to the Module (2x WT osc A/B, 12 stereo filters, Kaoss Physics, Motion Seq 2.0, 4 GB samples, Serum import)
Generations: mk1 2021 = 32 voices → mkII 2023 = 60 voices → Module 2024 = mkII feature set in 4U
Power: DC12V, 5 W - power bank via 12V PD trigger (~8-10 h on 74 Wh)
Weight: 2.9 kg / 565 mm vs. Module 1.7 kg / 4U

Core finding: There is NO mkII-keyboard-exclusive feature besides the keybed itself. The Module even has extras (recessed jacks, 15/45-degree brackets, rack option). The keybed: 37 full-size keys with velocity + release velocity, but NO aftertouch and no piano feel - deliberately left untouched in the mkII update. Damper jack without half-pedal (family-wide). Set-list recall via PC 0-63, Kaoss pad fully remotable via CC18/19 - Loopy can conduct both completely.

Verdict 43/50: Sonically exactly the Module, but pricier, heavier, bulkier - for a pianist who already owns controllers (Erae, LUMI, Grid) the keybed is dead weight. Only makes sense as a self-contained one-device spontaneous setup. Otherwise: the Module stays the buy (575 EUR). Budget trap: used mk1 = only 32 voices + old LFOs.

Deep Dive

Roland Jupiter-Xm ("the one with mini keys")

700-950 EUR used / 1549 new (06-10)
42
256 voices ZEN-Core 5 parts, 5 MIDI ch 8x AA battery ~3.5 h speakers 2x4W + XLR ABM models ~32 voices
Sound DNA: ABM = Analog Behavior MODELING (Jupiter-8, Juno-106, JX-8P, SH-101, JUPITER-X) - no sample playback. ZEN-Core tones = VA/PCM hybrid. XV-5080/RD PCM = the cheese zone, fully avoidable
USB: generic mode = class-compliant MIDI ONLY (iPad ok); USB audio needs the Roland vendor driver (Mac/Win) - audio goes analog/XLR into the L6
MIDI docs: official implementation PDF (CC/RPN/PC + full SysEx DT1 address map), 22 standard CCs, BLE MIDI as fallback
Haul: 4.4 kg, 576 mm, metal build; Ni-MH only + external charger; boot time unverified - test before a used buy

Core finding: The only device in the field that carries the busking mission COMPLETELY on its own (battery + speakers + keys + XLR, zero cables) AND fulfils the 4-part vision the bi-timbral Modwave cannot (4 play parts + rhythm on separate channels). Caveat: ABM models drop to ~32 voices; layering all 4 parts as ABM gets tight. Mini keys: good action (MusicRadar), but a surface for lines/pads, not a main keybed. Forum consensus: ABM is good, not quite ACB boutique level.

Verdict 42/50 (re-score; 06-06: 43): Do NOT buy new (1549 = almost 3x Modwave). Used at 700-950 it is the strongest ADDITION or alternative to the Modwave if busking autonomy + 4 parts outweigh wavetable exotics. As a pure rig module: the Modwave stays ahead.

Color tier

Arturia MicroFreak

4-voice PARAPHONIC CC64 = hold toggle only MONO out, no FX 22 engines (FW 5.0) 1.0 kg, USB power
Engine: 22 digital engines (12 Arturia incl. 3x granular + sample, 7 Mutable Plaits ports, 3 Noise Engineering) into ONE analog filter
Paraphonic, really: 4 amp envelopes, but ONE shared filter + filter env for everything - not true poly
MIDI: ~21 CCs + NRPNs + PC 0-127, official chart - good Loopy control
Busking gotcha: USB bus-powerable, BUT the capacitive touch keyboard can misbehave on floating power-bank ground (Arturia caveat)

Core finding: Hard fail on the 16+ poly floor AND the sustain test (CC64 is keyboard hold, not pedal behavior) AND mono out without FX (stereo would have to come from Loopy FX = iPad CPU). Structurally disqualified as a chord center. The sound DNA itself is great (Plaits/granular/speech, zero cheese), price/sound unmatched.

Verdict 31/50: Not a Modwave competitor - a different category. Legitimate as a later ~220 EUR used add-on for leads/granular color - only AFTER the center buy. FW 5.0 (May 2023) is the final state, no V6 / MicroFreak-2 signal.

Engine: 2 digital engines PER voice (~30 modes: VA, wavetable, FM, Karplus, 7x granular, sample, 16-band vocoder), per-voice ANALOG multimode filter + VCA
MIDI: 41 CCs + bank/PC + CC64, best docs of the Freak line - Loopy control is trivial
Power: 12V external, power bank only via myVolts Ripcord; 2.94 kg
MiniFreak V: desktop plugin included (Mac studio twin) - does NOT exist as iPad AUv3, which is fine (AUv3 ban)

Core finding: Best device of the Freak line, exemplary firmware care (3 big free updates), stereo stem with its own FX = zero iPad CPU cost. But: 6 voices + sustain pedal = voice stealing by bar two, and there is NO desktop version - you haul a 3 kg keyboard for a module role. At 521-550 EUR it sits right at the Modwave price (575), which delivers 60 voices.

Verdict 33/50: Never as the center. Only if the vocoder as a busking signature (550 EUR incl. gooseneck mic, ext-in vocodes synths/loops too) tips the scale - as a color layer NEXT TO the Modwave. "PolyFreak"/"MicroFreak 2" = pure forum speculation, waiting is not worth it.

Source base: Thomann/Korg/Roland/Arturia product pages + manuals, Roland MIDI implementation PDF, Arturia MIDI charts, midi.guide, Kleinanzeigen listings, MusicRadar/MusicTech/SoundOnSound reviews, Korg forums, Loopy Pro forum - all checks 2026-06-10. The MPE claim for the Korg modules (gearnews) is UNVERIFIED; Korg itself only states MIDI 2.0 PE + poly AT.

Note: 16 voices is the floor, not 8. In a 4-layer multi-patch (Iridium mk2) those 16 voices split across 4 parts = 4 voices/part = immediate voice-steal. Iridium multi is only sensible as a single 1-patch 16-voice case for sustain. The 60+ voice tier (Modwave/Wavestate) is the true sustain reserve. *Virus score honesty: ~32/50 in THIS sweep frame (pianist stereo axes) - the Lane A choice rests on axes the sweep does not measure: the 4-part sequencing vision, 3 stereo outs (multi-stem), character, heart favorite. 1. L6 "MIDI Out Mode=Out" test (without it every box is MIDI-dead). 2. Modartt user area: iOS serials registered? (restore flow). 3. DSP audit on the iPad. 4. Check the Koepenick Virus by phone (bot wall). 5. Enable the Pisound stock watch at Blokas. 6. Buy the Pi 5 8GB NOW (183-189, prices rising).
0 EUR (+ 184 early Pi buy recommended)
Stage 1 - Karwan money

Virus TI2 + Pi box parts

As soon as budget lands, target: both by July 4
Lane A: Virus TI2 Desktop used - negotiate Koepenick 1,400 or the Audiofanzine corridor 1,100-1,200 (shipping BE/FR). Bench test mandatory (EOL). Lane B: Pisound 99 (once in stock) + rest of the BOM ~50. Software 0 EUR thanks to the Pianoteq transfer.
~1,450-1,750 EUR total
Fallback + Stage 2

Modwave / later options

Only on a lane failure or new budget
Virus deal falls through: reactivate the Modwave Module 575 (best module pick, in stock). Pisound stays out of stock: Pisound Micro 69 (Pi5 compat unconfirmed) or wait. Later: Wavestate mkII / Opsix / Jupiter-Xm used / MPC Live III only on a mission shift.
575+ EUR situational

Stack A: Modwave plus Opsix Korg Twin

  • Modwave Module = pad / soundscape / sample / WT pool (60 stereo voices)
  • Opsix Module = FM lead / bass character (64-80 voices)
  • Both MIDI 2.0 plus poly-AT, both 4U rack form
  • Voice total around 140 when both are live
  • Maximum DNA gap: wavetable-sample vs altered-FM
  • Risk: same brand = workflow learning curve plus, sound-world diversity minus
Total ca. 1120 EUR (575 + 545, Thomann 06-10)

Stack B: Modwave plus Jupiter-Xm Hybrid

  • Modwave Module = wavetable-sample pad pool
  • Jupiter-Xm used = 5-part multi plus battery plus 4 vintage VA plus drums
  • Modwave = sound design, Jupiter-Xm = allrounder plus mobility
  • XLR plus TRS parallel = live-backup send plus pad layer
  • More orthogonal than Stack A (4 vintage engines plus PCM plus drums)
  • Risk: Jupiter DNA is vintage VA, not bleeding-edge
Total ca. 1275-1525 EUR (575 + 700-950 used)

Stack C: Single-Box Sniper Wavestate mkII

  • 120 stereo voices plus wave-seq 2.0 plus 4 GB sample in ONE unit
  • Highest voice count per euro in the sweep
  • Minimum gear footprint, maximum performability with one box
  • Combine with the Pi box (keys external, see the DIY tab) for DNA diversity - iPad instrument AUv3 are banned, do NOT plan around VIRAL T2x
  • Risk: single-engine paradigm can feel narrow over time
Total around 609 EUR (Thomann 06-10)

Stack D: Sample King Solo MPC Live III

  • 256 voices plus 128 GB SSD plus battery plus 32-ch USB audio
  • MPC = potential Loopy-center replacement, NOT companion
  • Workstation pivot, not a module add-on
  • Risk: routed out of the Loopy-first workflow
  • If the iPad+Loopy center is sacred: skip
Total 1569 EUR (11-14 weeks lead time, 06-10)
Lane B · locked in · as of 2026-06-11

Lane B: Pi Box plus the whole open-source story

Mission clarification first: The Pi box is the KEYS REPLACEMENT (Pianoteq/organ/SFZ external, because the iPad is at its instrument-AUv3 limit) - it adds ZERO new synth character and does NOT compete with Lane A or C. User-chosen on 2026-06-08, Zynthian-style. Not to be confused with the abandoned Pi UAC2 gadget bridge (USB multitrack into the iPad, 50-60% engineering, dead).

NEW 06-11: the Pianoteq license question is SOLVED - the transfer costs 0 EUR

The iOS in-app purchases (~400 EUR of instrument packs) are full Modartt licenses, no Apple lock-in. Official Modartt admin statement (Philippe Guillaume, forum.modartt.com): register the serial in the Modartt account (restore-purchases flow), then download the desktop/Linux version from the user area. 1 license = 3 slots (all iOS devices share 1 slot, leaving 2 for Pi + Mac). Pi 5: official Linux aarch64 builds (v8 + v9), the Pianoberry image = exactly Pi5+Pisound, ~1.5 ms @ 96 kHz. Optional: v8-to-v9 upgrade 29 EUR. Action: check the Modartt user area whether the iOS serials are registered - on problems, contact support with the Apple receipts.

Open-source engine map (verified 06-11)

Best engine per sound category

CategoryEngineCostHonest assessment
PianoPianoteq 8/9 (owned)048 voices on the Pi5 (the wall). The free backup sfizz+Salamander does NOT reach that level (forum consensus)
E-pianoPianoteq EP pack / Dexed (FM EP)0-49Weakest OS category: real Rhodes only via the Pianoteq pack, mda ePiano = light fallback
OrgansetBfree + Aeolus0Strongest OS category (tonewheel modeling). BUT: ear test mandatory (free-tier Hammond, cheese risk)
Stringssfizz + Virtual Playing Orchestra 30Pad-capable with all articulations - below pure-strings level (the iPad stays the reference)
Bass synthSurge XT (+ OB-Xd, Dexed)0Actually runs on the Pi5 - REPLACES FabFilter Twin 3 and offloads the iPad. Vital does NOT work (x64 only)

Cost truth: software entirely 0 EUR (plus optional 29 v9 upgrade / 49 EP pack). Only the hardware costs: ~320-345 EUR. Multi-engine CPU (Pianoteq + sfizz in parallel) plausible but unbenchmarked - measure on gate-test day.

The chosen plan

Pi 5 + Pisound sound box

~320-345 EUR (8 GB) / ~255-280 EUR (4 GB) + 15-30 h of your own work
Pianoteq officially aarch64 ~4-7 ms real end-to-end power bank 5V/3A is enough Pisound OUT OF STOCK (06-10)
Parts list: Pi 5 8GB 184 EUR (RAM crisis! 4GB: 116) + Pisound HAT 99 + case 16 + cooler/SD/PSU/shipping ~35-45
OS path: PiOS Lite 64-bit + headless jackd (Pianoberry template, github.com/elektrofon/pianoberry). Patchbox OS for Pi5 is beta only; ZynthianOS Oram "mostly working OK"
Engines (verified): Pianoteq 8 (official ARM, 96 kHz / 48 voices on Pi5), setBfree (Hammond), Dexed (FM), sfizz (SFZ), Surge XT (official aarch64 nightlies)
Control: iPad/Loopy conducts via MIDI program change; audio = 1 stereo stem analog into the L6
  • Latency truth: The 1.33 ms claim (Pianoberry) is pure buffer math without MIDI input (the author confirms this himself). Measured: 2.1 ms audio loopback + 2.1 ms MIDI loopback (Blokas specs), 3.6 ms round trip @64/48k. Realistic MIDI-in→audio-out: ~4-7 ms with a tuned 96k/128 setup - playable for piano. Double digits only with default configs.
  • Power truth: Pi5 really draws ~2.7-3.6 W idle, max ~8.8 W full load; Pisound +1.5 W. The box under Pianoteq load: ~5-9 W. A PD power bank @5V/3A (15 W) is documented as sufficient; 27W/5A is the official recommendation for the full USB peripheral budget, not the real demand (5V/5A is not a standard PD profile anyway). Gotchas: auto-shutdown at low load, boot peak, usb_max_current_enable=1.
  • Cost truth: The old ~230-260 EUR fell to the RAM crisis (3 Pi price hikes in 4 months, 8GB now 184 EUR) - today 320-345 EUR (8 GB). If you build: buy the Pi soon, prices keep rising.
  • Pianoteq license: 3 slots, OS-agnostic, ALL iOS devices = 1 slot combined - the owned license covers the Pi. BUT: deactivated slots are gone permanently - check the slot status in the Modartt user area first.
  • Busking: ~300-400 g total, no display needed, headless boot estimated 30-60 s (unverified). Mandatory: read-only root FS against SD corruption on hard power-off.

Risks: Pisound OUT OF STOCK at Blokas (06-10; fallback: Pisound Micro 69 EUR, low stock, max 96 kHz, Pi5 not officially listed). The Pisound spec page officially lists up to Pi4 only (Pi5 runs via kernel fix + community reports). DIY = no warranty, SD = single point of failure. Gates before ordering: (1) L6 "MIDI Out Mode=Out" test (5 min, 0 EUR - without it the box is MIDI-dead), (2) Modartt slot check, (3) DSP audit on the iPad.

Experiment, not a buy reason

OsTIrus / Osirus on the box (DSP56300)

officially aarch64Pi5 performance unproven

gearmulator officially builds for aarch64 incl. Raspberry Pi - but NO verified Pi5 success report exists. Devs: Pi4 = impossible, Orange Pi 5 = only "very close to realtime", recommendation: try Osirus (Virus A) first. DSP emulation is heavy.

Framing: Virus sound on your own box would be the cherry on top - treat it as an EXPERIMENT after the build, never as a buy reason. (The ROM IP issue remains: do not promote it in the community.)

Skip (wrong packaging)

Zynthian V5.1 turnkey kit

~680-700 EUR incl. Pi 5 8GB + VAT
stock volatile (06-10: not for sale)24V PSU, no USB-C PDPianoteq first-class

A clean product (alu case, touch, encoders, Pianoteq activation in webconf), but: ~350 EUR premium over the bare Pi box for display+encoders+case that the iPad-centric rig does not need - and the 24V PSU makes power-bank operation a problem. Pi5 under Oram still has remaining issues per the wiki. Boot 1-2 min.

Verdict: Only makes sense if you explicitly want a standalone device WITHOUT the iPad. The old "Zynthian skip" verdict stands, now source-backed (price + stock + power).

Tool, not an instrument

Raspberry Pi Pico / RP2040 / Pico 2

10-50 EUR
excellent MIDI glueaudio = toy class

Synth projects exist (pico_synth_ex, PicoADK with a 32-bit DAC), but they are learning platforms: PWM audio is documented as poor, I2S is better but stays in the lo-fi / few-voices class. No project reaches 16+ voices with sustain. The advertised 0.33 ms latency is engine-internal, irrelevant.

Verdict: Skip as a sound source. Great as a MIDI TOOL: USB MIDI bridges, MIDI glue, controller firmwares - matches the earlier finding "Pico = MIDI only".

Combo card: all skip for keys

Daisy · Norns · M8 headless · Organelle

none reaches 16+ voices + sustain
  • Electrosmith Daisy (Seed $30 / Pod $68): C++ DSP platform, community maximum ~8-voice VA (Pollen8) - 20h+ of own development, color tier at best.
  • monome Norns Shield: no longer produced, used market only; sampler/script-centric, not a poly keys host.
  • Dirtywave M8 headless (Teensy 4.1, $35-100): tracker workflow = fundamentally the wrong interface for a pianist. Conceivable as a cheap groove toy - different mission.
  • Critter & Guitari Organelle M/S2 (used from ~$400): PD patch instrument, quirky, mostly few voices, micro wooden keys - an instrument, not a module. Does run on 4x AA though.
Build vs. buy — the verdict

Pi box vs. Modwave Module: not an either-or

The two solve DIFFERENT missions: The Pi box (~270-345 EUR + 15-30 h) offloads exactly the keys sound generation that has the iPad at its AUv3 limit, reuses the owned Pianoteq license and adds zero new character. The Modwave Module (575 EUR, 0 h, 3-year warranty) is the synth power with its own sound DNA - but it plays no piano and does not free up the keys slots. The RAM crisis has shrunk the box price advantage to ~230-300 EUR: in 2026 it justifies itself through the mission, not the savings.

Realistic end state: both, in the order of the more urgent mission. Recommendation: gates this week (L6 MIDI test, Modartt slots, DSP audit), order parts on green, box the build hard into 2 weekends with kill criteria (boot <2 min, power-bank stable, <10 ms end-to-end, setBfree ear test). On red or timebox overrun: document the kill and BUY instead of tinkering on (organ: GSi Gemini 888; stage keys: used Mac mini M1 + Gig Performer).

Expressive controllers · verified 2026-06-10

Expressive Controllers

The other half of the rig: synths = sound, controllers = expression. 4 axes, each independent. Key finding: none of them is a must-buy right now - owned gear covers the axes roughly, budget priority stays Modwave + Pi box. Prices/stock all cross-checked 06-10.

Axis 1: snapshot morph

Neuzeit Drop vs. Timepod vs. Electra One

Drop 799 EUR (Thomann, in stock)
Drop: DE in stock Timepod: SOLD OUT Electra One: SOLD OUT until mid-2026
Neuzeit Drop: 32 encoders + 8 faders + 8 mutes, 2 layers, 400 snapshots, DROP mode (snapshot fires quantized at the pattern end with fade = real crossfade), CV, class-compliant bus-powered. 799 EUR, German maker. 1522g (heaviest busk option)
Modern Midi Timepod: 16 encoders, 14-bit CC, 3 morph modes, ~$449 - but SOLD OUT, no EU dealer, US import + VAT/duty (real ~450-550 EUR)
Electra One MK2: 12 encoders + touchscreen, Lua morph, 432 snapshots, 510 EUR - SOLD OUT until mid-2026
NOT morph: Faderfox EC4 / Intech Grid (setup recall only, no fade) - busking-strong but the wrong axis

Verdict: Of 3 real morph boxes, 2 are dead for an immediate buy. The Drop is the only one in stock - and it wins not just by default: DROP mode (quantized at the pattern end) is built exactly for live looping. If you want Timepod's $449 + lighter format: wait for the US restock, ping the status, do not import blindly.

Axis 2: MPE gestures

Embodme Erae 2 (upgrade from the owned Erae 1)

949 EUR (Thomann, in stock)
USB-C bus power (busk fix!) 16k force sensors + 8-track looper + 24 CV ERAE SOUND = NOT an iPad synth no must-buy now

A real upgrade over the owned Erae 1: USB-C bus power solves the mains-powered busking liability of the Erae 1, class-compliant device+host for the iPad. 16,000 pressure sensors, built-in 8-track looper, 24 CV outs.

Expectation management: ERAE SOUND (06-02, 82 EUR) is a Mac/Win desktop plugin (VST3/AU/standalone) - no iOS/AUv3. The Erae 2 produces NO sound of its own on the iPad, stays a pure MPE controller in Loopy. No battery (unlike ROLI Seaboard 2), but power-bank capable. MIDI 2.0 unverified. Verdict: 949 EUR eats half the budget for a non-sonic axis the Erae 1 + LUMI already cover roughly. Wait until after Modwave/Pi box.

Axis 3: keyboard (88-key portable)

Piano de Voyage 88

1,290 EUR (corrected from 1193)
full 88-key range, portable unweighted spring action no aftertouch no must-buy now

Modular 4 modules = 88 keys (or 40/64), 4.5 kg, 81-voice poly, USB-C iPad-capable. Covers the real gap (LUMI BLOCK = only 24 keys). In 2026 there is no better real 88-key busking option.

Alternatives scan: CME Xkey Air max 37 keys (too short), ROLI Seaboard 2 only 49 keys (covers MPE+keys in one, 8h battery - if 88 range is not mandatory), Arturia/Nektar 88s = too heavy/stationary. Verdict: unweighted + no AT = a pianist's compromise, 1290 EUR for a purely playability (non-sonic) axis. The owned LUMI BLOCK is enough short-term for triggering. Wait.

Axis 4: owned (enough for now)

What you already have

covers 3 axes roughly
  • Erae Touch (Erae 1): MPE gestures - owned. Only real weakness: mains-powered (busk liability). Exactly what the Erae 2 fixes - but not urgent.
  • LUMI Keys BLOCK: 24 lit MPE keys - triggering + short phrases + learn LEDs. Covers the keyboard axis short-term (just not the full range).
  • monome Grid: pad/step/clip axis (own geometry, not a keyboard replacement).
  • MusiKraken: iPad-camera hand tracking, experimental gestures, free, same-device no host.

Bottom line across all 4 axes: buy NOTHING before Modwave + Pi box. Erae 2 + Piano de Voyage 88 are "later, nice-to-have". If a controller axis comes up NOW, it's the Drop (snapshot morph, the only one in stock + live-looping capable).

Source base: Thomann/Neuzeit/modernmidi.io/electra.one/embodme.com/pianodevoyage.com/roli.com product pages, SoundOnSound/MusicRadar/gearnews/Synth-Anatomy reviews - all checks 2026-06-10.

Critical Truths + Skip

The points that keep getting misstated in almost every discussion - verified. Plus the complete K-O list at the end.

NEW 06-11: Pianoteq iOS IAP = full Modartt license (transfer 0 EUR)

No Apple lock-in. Official Modartt admin statement: register the serial in the account, download the desktop/Linux build. 1 license = 3 slots (all iOS = 1 slot). The ~400 EUR of iOS packs cover the Pi box too. Action: user-area check, on problems contact support with the Apple receipts.

NEW 06-11: the Virus TI has real wavetable morphing

WaveTable mode with index 0-127, interpolates between waves (manual-verified), live via CC#17/22, the interpolation parameter itself modulatable, ~99 tables, grain/formant modes on top. No user import - but the WT mission is covered. Consequence: Lane C (Modwave) loses its main reason.

NEW 06-11: Pisound out of stock = Lane B blocker

Blokas lists the Pisound HAT (99 EUR) as out of stock (06-10 + 06-11 confirmed). Tindie 115 USD status unclear, Pisound Micro 69 EUR low stock with unconfirmed Pi5 compatibility. Enable the stock watch. The Pi 5 itself is in stock (183-189) and should be bought soon due to the RAM crisis.

Aodyo insolvency 2026 = Anyma Phi / Omega out

Aodyo is insolvent. Anyma Phi is out anyway because it is mono. Anyma Omega is pushed to 2027 (INODESIGN production plant). Do NOT pre-order due to insolvency echo. Watchlist only.

Synthstrom Deluge USB audio = hallucinated

Stream 3 confirms it: NO USB audio CC in rev2.5, not in stable 1.2.1 Chopin, not in the 2026-06-03 nightly. Plus 1420 EUR tariff price. Deluge falls out of the buy plan despite 64+90 voices and 7+ engines.

MPC Live III USB audio = confirmed class-compliant

Akai lists 32 channels of class-compliant USB-C to iPad and it is verified. Loopy AU bridge limits still need testing before buy (worst case only stereo is usable). Only unit in the list with a real multi-channel audio path direct to iPad.

Iridium Core = 12 voices, not 16

Fact-check correction. Iridium Core has 12 voices, not 16. Borderline for pianist-sustain with multi-layer patches. Iridium Desktop mk1 and mk2 have 16. Verify the spec before any module buy.

PCM workstations stay out due to cheese

Integra-7, Genos, MC-707, Fantom-06/-07/-08, MODX+ = hard K-O. ZEN-Core / AWM2 / SuperNATURAL DNA is the workstation-cheese family. User-explicit exclusion.

The 16-voice multi-mode trap

16 voices is the floor, not 8 (often misstated). But in a 4-layer multi patch (e.g. Iridium mk2) those 16 voices split across 4 parts = 4 voices/part = immediate voice-steal. Iridium multi is only practical as a single 1-patch 16-voice case for sustain. The 60+ voice tier (Modwave/Wavestate) is the true sustain reserve.

NEW 06-10: "Prophet XM" and "MacroFreak" do not exist

Cross-checked 2026-06-10: Sequential only ever made Prophet X / Prophet XL (both discontinued ~2024), no "XM" - the name blends Jupiter-Xm and Prophet X. Arturia never built a MacroFreak - that is the MiniFreak. Both devices are now profiled in the Deep Dives tab.

NEW 06-10: ERAE SOUND is Mac/Win desktop, NOT an iPad synth

ERAE SOUND (released 2026-06-02, 79 EUR) is a VST3/AU/standalone plugin for Mac/Win - no iOS AUv3, no on-device synth inside the Erae 2. It does NOT solve the "move sound generation off the iPad" problem. The old memory entry ("Jan 2026, built-in synth") was wrong.

NEW 06-10: the RAM crisis eats the Pi price advantage

Three Raspberry Pi price hikes in four months (LPDDR4 crisis): Pi 5 8GB now ~184 EUR street. The Pi box really costs 320-345 EUR (8 GB) instead of the old 230-260. Plus: Pisound out of stock at Blokas (06-10). If you build, buy the Pi soon - and the box justifies itself through the keys mission, not the savings. Details in the Lane B tab.

Aodyo Anyma Omega

Physical modeling plus VA plus WT plus FM hybrid, 16 voices multitimbral. Update 06-10: assets with INODESIGN since summer 2025 (new Aodyo SARL), Omega revival announced but WITHOUT a date - the old "2027" is not officially backed anywhere. Do NOT pre-order. Anyma Phi repair/support still unclear.

2027 expected

Schlappi Forest

16-voice FM, Eric Schlappi, desktop. If FM character plus 16 voices ends up live-improv viable, waiting may be worth more than an Opsix buy now.

SHIPPED (06-11: Thomann in stock, $2,299)

ASM Leviasynth Desktop

16 voices plus MPE plus onboard poly-AT pads, algorithmic hybrid with 144 algos plus 300 waves. Scores 35 in the sweep. In stock now - but it eats the whole budget, wait for hands-on reviews.

RELEASED April 2026, 969 EUR

Korg phase8

Tabletop acoustic unit with real steel resonators, 8 voices. Niche character source, not a pianist center. Buyable now - stays watch (character add after the lanes).

No signal (06-10)

Arturia "MicroFreak 2" / "PolyFreak"

Pure forum speculation, no official announcement whatsoever, nothing at Superbooth 2026. Arturia's policy (big free firmware updates: MicroFreak 5.0, MiniFreak 4.0 vocoder) points to platform care, not a successor. Waiting is NOT worth it.

Shipping, EUR 4,199 (06-11)

Frap Tools Magnolia

In stock now - but 4,199 EUR. STRUCK from serious watching, the price class never fits the mission. The data point remains.

Released ~May 2026, EUR 2,249

Clank Uranograph (correction: 3 voices)

In stock now, but only 3 voices (previously listed as 5) - doubly under the floor. Struck as a candidate, remains a curiosity data point.

New in the 06-11 scan

Apaeron AFOUR + Buchla Ziggy

AFOUR: 35 voices, 4-part desktop, aiming under 2k - price/date TBA, the most exciting watchlist candidate for a later lane. Buchla Ziggy $999: mono, character data point only.

One-line summary (v3, 06-11)

Gates this week (0 EUR) -> with Karwan money: Virus TI2 used (Lane A, 1,100-1,400) + Pi box (Lane B, ~320-345, software 0 EUR thanks to the Pianoteq transfer) -> both live-ready by July 4. The Modwave is the fallback if the Virus deal falls through. Skip stays: everything under 16 voices, all full keyboards, all PCM workstations.
